Besides extensive reviews of neuropsychological aspects and assessment tools of degenerative dementias, the progressive thinning out of cortical neurons was early recognised as a potentially fruitful natural experiment to answer basic cognitive questions. Neuropsychological deficits from extra-cerebral origin are also listed herein.
